I thought I was start this off with something that happened to me this weekend. My oldest son Connor who is 7, is a pretty smart kid and loves football immensely. Every since he turned 4 we have gone to Pittsburgh for a Steelers game once a year.
The year we had everything set to go up for the Browns game. I got a hotel walking distance from the stadium and got great seats since I have a friend there with season tickets. Friday, however, would be one of those days where my son lapsed into completely stupid mode. Right at 5PM (30 minutes before we'd normally pick him up) he's playing tag with friends at daycare and runs up the slide. I get a call to find out that he's jumped off the top of the slide and face planted into the ground injuring his shoulder. Of course, I'm not a happy camper. First because why didn't they get on their asses for running up and down the slide. And because I've got quite a bit of money invested in hotel, plane and game tickets....frankly, if he hadn't hurt himself i could have killed him...figuratively speaking anyway. :)
So I get to daycare, ask him why he jumped off and get the usual I dunno answer. I head to my chiro hoping its separated or dislocated and he indicates he thinks is broken.....so off to the ER I go. Meanwhile I have to hear Connor whine about not being able to go to the game...of course I remind him that I didn't tell him to jump 9' to the ground from the slide....kids.
After a few hours in the ER the doc comes in and confirms its broken (I saw the XRAY so I knew). Of course he says that they don't do much for them and he's not in any real pain. We can put him in a sling or in a figure 8 brace. I opt for the figure 8 because I know it holds it better, plus its a bit uncomfortable...and yes...I want him to remember this.
Of course the next question is, can he go to the game. I get the usual doc speak about legally I can't say go blah blah...to which my next question is...its your kid...do you go? To which he replies..yeah, I'm going to the game. So I pay the bill and we head home pack and 3 hours later we are on the way to a game. Amazingly, he doesn't' complain about the pain and is using the arm pretty well. I even had to remind him to stop high-fiving people in the stands with it....
Anyway, we had al ot of fun, couldn't do a few things we planned to because of the arm and he got kudos from Steelers fans for making the game, broken collar bone or not.
